What is rhodium plating?
Rhodium plating is a process in which a thin layer of rhodium (a rare and durable precious metal) is electroplated onto the surface of white gold engagement rings, white gold wedding bands and platinum rings. Rhodium is part of the platinum family and is prized for its brilliant, reflective finish, as well as its resistance to corrosion and tarnishing.
What are the benefits of rhodium plating?
Enhances Appearance
Rhodium plating gives jewellery a bright, mirror-like shine, enhancing the metal's overall appearance.
Durability
Rhodium plating increases the scratch resistance and durability of the underlying metal.
Prevents Tarnishing
Rhodium protects the base metal from tarnishing.
How often should white gold rings be rhodium plated?
White gold rings typically need to be rhodium plated every 1 to 3 years, depending on factors like wear, exposure to chemicals, and personal habits. Rings that are worn daily, such as engagement rings or wedding bands, may require more frequent re-plating, as the rhodium coating can wear down faster due to constant contact with surfaces and exposure to elements like soap, lotions, and household cleaners.
If the ring starts to look dull or develops a slight yellowish tint (the natural colour of white gold without rhodium), it's usually a sign that re-plating is needed. Some people prefer to re-plate their rings annually to keep them looking showroom-fresh and brilliant.
How often should platinum rings be rhodium plated?
Platinum rings generally do not require rhodium plating as frequently as white gold rings, since platinum is naturally white and does not need rhodium to enhance its colour. However, some people still choose to have their platinum rings rhodium plated for a shinier, reflective finish.
If rhodium is applied to a platinum ring, it may last longer due to platinum’s durability, often requiring re-plating every 2 to 5 years, depending on wear and tear. Unlike white gold, platinum doesn’t tarnish or lose its colour, so rhodium plating is mostly optional for aesthetic purposes.
How long does rhodium plating take?
If the jewellery is delivered to us during the week it can usually be completed the same day (depending on the workshop workload). If delivered on the weekend it will take 2-3 business days. During busier periods this can also change. Please contact us to discuss specific requirements.
Do you offer rhodium plating for jewellery purchased elsewhere?
Unfortunately, due to an increased workload and backlog, we are currently only able to service rings, diamond earrings, bangles, bracelets and pendants purchased from SH.
Does rhodium plating affect the diamonds and gemstones in a ring?
Rhodium plating does not affect diamonds or most gemstones in terms of durability or appearance. The process involves applying a thin layer of rhodium to the metal parts of a piece of jewellery, leaving the stones untouched. However, there are a few things to consider:
Diamonds
Rhodium plating won’t damage diamonds and can actually enhance their brilliance by providing a bright, reflective background. Diamonds are very hard and unaffected by the plating process.
Sensitive Gemstones
Some softer or porous gemstones, like emeralds or pearls can be more sensitive to chemicals or heat used in the plating process. We can cover or remove these stones before plating to best protect them.
Careful Application
Our plating process is controlled so that only the metal parts are coated, avoiding any unnecessary contact with the gemstones.
Overall, rhodium plating is safe and designed to enhance the appearance of diamond and gemstone engagement rings.
