A universal symbol of devotion, unity and ever-lasting love, diamond engagement rings represent a commitment to marriage, typically worn on the ring finger of the left hand as a visible symbol of the wearer's engaged status. When the couple becomes married, a wedding band is added to the same finger, indicating the vows have been exchanged.
Once you’ve decided on a budget for your gold engagement ring, the Diamond & Jewellery Consultants at SH will help you select a shortlist of rings representing the style, diamond quality and metal colour best suited to your partner’s personality and style.
18kt gold is considered the best metal type for an engagement ring, as it possesses the perfect balance of durability and gold purity. Anything lower, like 14kt gold, will produce a duller hue, and anything higher than 18kt gold is too soft to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use.
18kt gold can be used to make white gold, rose gold and yellow gold engagement rings. Generally speaking, white gold is considered more hypoallergenic than yellow or rose gold, as yellow and rose gold alloys often contain a higher percentage of copper, which can sometimes cause irritation for individuals with sensitive skin.
Platinum engagement rings are also considered hypoallergenic, and are resistant to scratches, tarnish and corrosion, making them ideal for everyday wear. Due to the ductile nature of Platinum, the prongs holding your diamond in place will wear better over time with hard bumps.
Unlike white gold, platinum has a naturally white colour which does not fade or require rhodium plating. Its natural white hue enhances the brilliance and beauty of diamonds, allowing them to sparkle more prominently.
Platinum’s scarcity and density contribute to its higher value, making platinum engagement rings a symbol of luxury and exclusivity.
Ultimately, the choice between white gold or platinum engagement rings depends on your personal preferences, budget and lifestyle. If you prioritise durability, hypoallergenic properties and the natural white colour without the need for plating, platinum may be the ideal choice.
If you prefer a slightly warmer tone and are budget-conscious, a white gold engagement ring will be the more affordable option.

Our most popular engagement ring style is by far the Solitaire; a classic engagement ring that celebrates a single centre diamond on a simple 18kt gold band.
Solitaire engagement rings are closely followed by Timeless Engagement Rings, which boast additional diamonds along the band designed to accentuate the centre stone.
Our other core engagement ring styles include Halo, Three-Stone (also known as Trilogy), and the most luxurious of all, Modern Engagement Rings.
All ring categories can feature a variety of diamond setting types and diamond cuts.
In addition to the traditional Round Brilliant Cut, SH engagement rings feature seven fancy diamond cuts:
Although natural white diamond engagement rings are our steady crowd favourite, coloured engagement rings have been rising in popularity over the years for those seeking something a little less conventional.
Sapphire engagement rings are by far the most popular coloured engagement ring alternative to white diamonds, followed by ruby rings, then emerald designs.
Engagement ring value is largely determined by the quality of the diamond; diamond quality is assessed using the 4Cs (Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat).
Cut is the most important criterion and indicates how sparkly the diamond is based on its ability to reflect light.
Carat refers to the size of the diamond.
Clarity measures any naturally-occurring imperfections found within the stone.
Colour indicates the diamond’s colour grade - SH diamonds are predominantly graded D, E or F in colour, representing the brightest, whitest diamonds on Earth.

Diamond engagement rings were traditionally thought to cost three times a man's monthly salary, which today equates to around $22,000 for Australians earning an average weekly income. Other sources claim one month's salary to be the acceptable price for an Australian engagement ring.
Everybody's financial circumstances are unique. We suggest setting a realistic budget you can comfortably afford using 'buy now, pay later' services like Afterpay and ZipMoney to make convenient, interest-free instalments. You only get one engagement ring, so invest in a diamond size and style that you and your partner will be proud of fifty years from now.

The most commonly requested carat size for engagement rings by our customers in Australia is 1 carat. A 1 carat diamond in a classic Solitaire engagement ring creates a substantial look for a single diamond design.
Ultimately, what is considered 'big' is subjective, and also depends on the size of the hand; a 0.5 carat diamond on a very dainty hand with slim fingers may appear a lot larger, whereas the same carat diamond on a larger hand will have the opposite effect.
The most expensive diamond cut is the Round Brilliant Cut Diamond. This is due to the volume of the rough stone lost during the cutting and polishing process - about 60% of the entire stone, which can't be used for anything else and is ultimately discarded. This, coupled with the global popularity of the Round Brilliant Cut diamond, make it the most expensive diamond shape for engagement rings.
Fancy diamond cuts like Emerald, Princess, Asscher and Radiant Cuts are the most affordable diamond shapes for engagement rings. This is due to the volume of rough stone retained during the cutting and polishing process - about 80% of the entire stone.
This means only 20% of the stone is discarded to create these squarish cut diamonds, compared with 60% of rough stone lost when faceting a Round Brilliant Cut diamond (the most expensive diamond cut).
Oval, Pear, Marquise and Emerald Cut diamonds can often appear bigger than other diamond cuts of equal carat weight due to their uniquely elongated shape. Size isn't everything though - nothing sparkles quite as intensely as an ideally faceted Round Brilliant Cut diamond, so what you gain in perceived size with a fancy cut diamond, may be traded for sparkle when comparing the two stones of equal carat weight side-by-side.
